The main gate of the temple

The main gate is the oldest building in Toshoji temple. It was built in 1740 (bunkyu 5). The roof was changed from a thatched roof to a tiled roof in 1967.


Main hall of the temple

The image of Dainichi Nyorai was enshrined in the main hall. The most part of the main hall is built of cypress. The main hall built in the Tokugawa period was destroyed by the earthquake in 1923 (Taisho 12) (Kanto earthquake). It was rebuilt in 1934 (Showa 9).


Drawing room and the priests’ living quarters

The drawing room and the priest’s living quarters were built in 1966 (Showa 41) and present appearance was completed through two times reconstruction in 1987 (Showa 62) and 1994 (Heisei 6).

 

Amitabha hall

The Amitabha hall was built in 1757. The roof was made of thatch. The size of the building is 5.64m in width and 5.64m in depth. The roof was changed form a thatched roof to a tin roof in 1967.



Joroku Amitabha Nyorai

he image of Joroku Amitabha Nyorai is enshrined in the Amitabha hall. It was rebuilt raising funds by religious mendicancy over 3 years from 1756 to 1758. The statue is 2.595m tall and the pedestal is 1.035m in height. Total height of the statue is 3.63m. The size of the statue is one of the big statues in the Miura Peninsula. It was caved by Mituhashi Kyunai Tadayuki and his son who were sculptors of Buddhist images in Kamakura.

The image of Joroku Amitabha Nyorai is an important cultural property appointed by Zushi city. Unfortunately, the image of Joroku Amitabha caved by Unkei to mourn for Minamoto Sanetomo’s death was destroyed by the fire in 1727.



Gorinnotou (five-story-pagoda) of the former Keizouin temple

Gorinnotou in front of the main hall is an important cultural property certificated by the state. Formally, Gorinnotou had been placed in the graveyard of Keizoin temple which was a Shingon Buddhism temple. It is said that this is the tomb of Nikaidou Gyounen who was an officer of the Kamakura shogun ate.

The tomb is made of andesite. The date of his death (July 7th, 1303) is inscribed on the tomb. It was moved to Toshoji in 1976.



The principal image of Dainichi Nyorai (tathagata)

Dainichi Nyorai is the principal image of Toshoji and it was built in 1700 (Genroku 12). It was repaired in 1984 and was restored to its original state.



Hitotubashi Kannon (the Goddess of Mercy Bodhisattva)

There is statue of Hitotubashi Kannon in the room on the right side of the main hall. The room is also called Kannondo. It is a stone image of the eleven faces Kannon Bodhisattva. It had been enshrined in a Kannondo temple at Yasaka in Ikego.

The origin of its name derives from the name of the bridge “Hitotubashi”across the Ikego River near the temple. It is said that Hitotubashi Kannon is effective for bringing up your baby healthy and a charm to cure children's tantrums.



Jizou Bosatu (Bodhisattava)

Jizou Bosatu is enshurined as the right-hand attendant of Dainichi Nyorai. It was built in 1818 (bunsei gannen).

 

Statue of Kobo Daishi

There is a statue of Kobo Daishi in front of the image of Dainichi Nyorai. It was built in 1671 and repaired adding the pedestal in 1983 (Showa 58).

 

Housen Fukurokujuson

Housen Fukurokujuson is enshrined as the temple’s protective Buddha through the lasty chief priests but one. It is one of the principal images in the Shonan Seven Deities of Good Fortune. And Shonan Seven Deities of Good Fortune was opened in 1973 (Showa 48). Many people visit this temple to pray Housen fukurokujuson during the New Year's holy days.

 

The statue of trainee Kobo Daishi

There is a life statue of trainee Kobo Daishi made of granite on the rock arrangement made of Kiso stone in front of the main hall. It was built on October in 1987 (Showa 62).
